UPDATE: At a press conference Monday afternoon, Washington coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins his starting quarterback "for 2015, moving forward. It’s Kirk’s team.”

Robert Griffin III was widely expected to be Washington's starting quarterback this season but injuries have prompted Gruden to reverse course.

“Robert’s done some great things, no question,” Gruden said. “We just feel like Kirk has earned the right to be the starting quarterback in 2015.”

Things just keep getting worse for RGIII.

According to an ESPN report, Washington QB Robert Griffin III will be sitting on the sidelines during the Redskins Week 1 matchup with the Dolphins after the team named backup Kirk Cousins its opening day starter Monday.

Griffin has not been cleared to play after suffering a concussion in Washington’s second preseason game against the Lions.

Coach Jay Gruden will address the media later Monday.

The No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft, Griffin has battled multiple injuries during his brief career and most recently the perception that Washington coaches and management don’t want him on the team anymore. ESPN also reported over the weekend that members of the coaching staff and the front office have pushed to have the enigmatic QB traded. Ownership, led by Dan Snynder, is refusing to give up on Griffin.

Cousins, in his third season with Washington, has started nine games, including five last season.
