In what his lawyers called a clear violation of a Wisconsin man's first amendment rights, Thomas Smith was arrested in 2012 and charged with disorderly conduct and  criminal use of a computer for cursing at Village of Arena police on their Facebook page.

“Fuck ths fucking cops,” “fucking racist basturds an fucking all of y'all who is racist,” Smith wrote in response to a post he felt was racist, according to Motherboard.

But horrible spelling is not a crime, and neither is speaking out to criticize authority in this country, even if that means cursing them out on the internet.

Smith sued the police department for $35,000, and on Wednesday he won, according to an announcement from his lawyers.

From the Aquino law firm's blog:

Federal and state courts have routinely held that the right to free speech is not limited to polite speech alone. In our country, we are entitled to criticize our government with passion. The use of some four-letter words in the course of doing so is never a crime. We hope that the Arena Police Department, and other police departments across the state, have now learned this lesson.

Justice served.
